PS4 Pro HDMI Port Repair

Posted: July 20, 2019 in TouchTech

PS4 HDMI Port Fix 2019.

We are often excited to play our favorite video games on our favorite console,
to the point we hurry and plug the power cable into the back of the console, grab the
HDMI cable to wiggle it up and down, left and right until we get it to seat properly.

There has been many cases online whereas these ports break loose from the mainboard due to the constant pushing N tugging. While often times the pushing N tugging causes the small pins inside the port to bend, Sony has been known to have multiple repairs on the PS4’s mainboard due to this 4 pinned port attached. However, majority of consumers fall out of warranty before this failure occurs.

Do we know and understand how fragile these components are? We must know that the PS4 console is merely a computer, while understanding that its mainboard and peripherals are only protected by plastic and metal with minimal shock resistance, we must be careful. Often we become careless and don’t heed to the fact that these parts are fragile and the computer/system/console is expensive.

At the end of spring just days before summer, a neighbor had an issue where his little brother plugged in the Power and HDMI cables to find the “NO SIGNAL” system error on the screen. Well I told them that i could troubleshoot it, therefore i began the repair.

Before you attempt to open the console yourself, try going to Sony’s website to solve your issue. According to Sony website these steps might help Reset Video Settings and Manual.

If you changed televisions or changed the type of cable you are using, you may need to reset the video output on the PS3. Perform the following steps to reset the Video Output Settings.

  1. Before changing cables, make sure the PS3 is turned off and the power light is red.
  2. Unplug the power cord of the PS3 and television (or display) from the wall socket.
  3. Make sure the HDMI cable is connected to the [HDMI OUT] port on the back of the PS3 system.
  4. Connect the other end of the HDMI cable into the [HDMI Input] port of the TV or display monitor.
  5. Plug the PS3 and television (or display) back into the wall socket.
  6. While the PS3 system is in standby mode (red light on the front of the system), hold down the On/Off button on the front of the system for at least 5 seconds until you hear a second beep. The Video Output Settings will automatically reset to the standard resolution (or detect the current display output settings of your TV/monitor).

OK! lets begin.

Service Day 1:
A. Removed Hard Drive, torx bit screws and opened the console to remove the metal support/protection shield.
This allowed access to the mainboard. I then carefully removed the heatsink, the WIFI
antenna, the main power connector and all Data ribbons.

B. Viewed and recorded the mainboards model number and HDMI type and ordered the corresponding HDMI port online.
I removed all the torx bit and small phillips screws holding the metal shield and placed them in a small glass jar.
I then set the console, the jar holding the screws and the case covers aside on a wooden palate to minimize friction or sliding of any kind while waiting on the port to arrive.

C. Played the waiting game.

Service Day 2:
A. Removed old port.
I used a soldering iron, heat gun and Small pliers to remove the old port.

B. Installed new port.
I used a heat gun and pliers to install the new port.

C. ReAssembled the console in reverse order.
Storing the screws in the glass jar helped.

D. Did Not get too excited but Carefully connected the HDMI cable and power cord.
After turning on the machine, the console started to update.
After the update completed the system prompted to connect the controller to proceed,
but realized i didn’t have one(controller).

E. Allowed system to run for about 1hr.
Wishing i could play a FPS round, i finally shut it down.

Service day 3:
A. I powered on the system and it Displayed the previous message of connecting a controller, therefore I shut it down and returned it to the happy neighbor.

Day 7 after return to happy neighbor:
Happy Neighbor says “They haven’t stopped playing since he got it back”.

Tools used:
Torx bit 8.
Small Phillips Screwdriver.
Soldier Iron.
Heat Gun.
Small Clamp Vice.
Cardboard piece to protect the mainboard from the vice.
New HDMI Port.
Container to hold screws.
Wooden palate.

Hope this helps!

To completely erase a Macintosh hard drive that runs OS X 10.3.x or above—use the Disk Utility that is built into the Macintosh operating system.

Erasing a hard drive deletes all the volumes and files on the drive. Therefore, before you erase the hard drive, if you want to keep files on the drive, copy them to a form of external media (e.g., a Zip disk or a CD).

By default, Disk Utility erases only the information used to access the files, not the data in the files themselves. Therefore, the erased files can be recovered. If you need to erase a disk so that the files cannot be recovered, you can select security options within the utility to do so (i.e., write e disk space).

How to Use Disk Utility to Erase a Macintosh Hard Drive (OS X 10.3.x or 10.4.x)

You must reboot your computer using the OS X system CD that came with your Macintosh. To do so, follow these steps:

Insert the CD into the CD drive.
Hold down the C key during the startup process.

Select your preferred language. You will then see the Welcome to the Mac OS X Installer window.

From the Installer Menu Bar, click Open Disk Utility. You will then see the Disk Utility window.

In the left pane of the Disk Utility window, click the drive you want to erase.

In the right pane of the Disk Utility window, click the Erase tab.
From the Volume Format drop-down menu, select Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

In the Name field, highlight the existing text and type the name the hard drive is to be called after it’s formatted.
NOTE: If you ever plan to connect another computer running OS 9 to this hard drive, you’ll want to install the Mac OS 9 disk driver, so that this disk will be visible from an OS 9-booted computer. If you don’t know if you will do this in the future, it’s best to install these drivers.

The following are the available security options:

Don’t Erase Data—This option only rewrites the headers on the disk. Files can be recovered by forensics, disk utilities, and other advanced recovery software.
Zero Out Data—There are forensics utilities that, albeit expensive and time consuming, can retrieve zeroed-out data.
7-Pass Erase—This is considered sufficient by government standards to erase data from a disk. It writes random data over the disk seven times. It may take several hours or more to complete this process.
35-Pass Erase—This makes it absolutely impossible to regain any data off the drive. This option takes an extremely long time, possibly more than one day.

Click the radio button in front of 7-Pass Erase (recommended by UD).
Click OK.
Click Erase.
Confirm you want to erase. The program will unmount the volume, partition the drive, and rename the volume to the name you typed in step #7 above.

Hope This Helps.
